The BstronG Forever Foundation is inspired by the life and memory of Broeden (Brody) Gard. Brody was an admirable athlete, both on the baseball and football field, with a gregarious and energetic personality. In July 2010, at the age of 9 years old, Brody was diagnosed with DIPG, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a malignant stage IV brain stem tumor. Immediately after diagnosis, he became a patient at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Brody fought this catastrophic disease for 16 months under the watchful and loving care of Dr. Broniscer and his staff in the neuro-oncology clinic. In November 2011, Brody succumbed to this awful disease. We watched Brody fight his battle against a disease that took him physically, but will never take his spirit from us.
Brody lived life to the fullest every day and loved with his whole heart. He never complained or felt sorry for himself. Brody was a kind, quiet kid who never wanted the limelight. Everyone learned quickly that Brody did not want to be treated differently or want any sympathy. His friends around him learned how to be compassionate without embarrassing him. His family and friends made sure all of his needs were met and never left him to struggle. Brody was always right in the middle of his friends entertaining with his quick wit, contagious personality and a smile to melt your heart. Brody’s desire was to be a boy – not a boy with cancer.
During his fight, Brody's courage and strength inspired a classmate to create the phrase: BstronG, Brody strong.
This special boy’s fighting spirit inspired the BstronG Forever Foundation, which is committed to raising funds to help children and families who are fighting life-threatening illnesses. Brody and his family were blessed to receive help from numerous persons within their community and others. As a foundation, we strive to assist those in this community and in others.
